G.W.F. Hegel – Idealism & the Ethical State

1️⃣ INTRODUCTION
Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (1770–1831) is a central figure in German Idealism.
Major work: Philosophy of Right
For Hegel, reality is rational and history is the unfolding of reason.
2️⃣ IDEALISM
Unlike materialists, Hegel believes:
- Ideas drive history
- Spirit (Geist) develops over time
- History is rational process
Human freedom evolves through historical stages.
3️⃣ DIALECTICAL METHOD
Hegel introduces dialectics:
- Thesis
- Antithesis
- Synthesis
Conflict leads to higher unity.
History progresses through contradictions.
4️⃣ CONCEPT OF FREEDOM
Freedom is not absence of restraint.
Freedom = Recognition within ethical community.
True freedom exists within the state.
5️⃣ CIVIL SOCIETY & STATE
- Family → Natural unity
- Civil society → Sphere of economic interests
- State → Ethical unity
State reconciles individual and universal interest.
6️⃣ ETHICAL STATE
State is highest manifestation of moral life (Sittlichkeit).
It embodies universal reason.
“The State is the march of God on earth.”
7️⃣ CRITICISM
- Justifies authoritarianism?
- Over-glorification of state
- Abstract & difficult theory
