Karl Marx – State, Ideology & Class Power

UPSC PSIR | Core Political Theory | High Analytical Weightage

1️⃣ INTRODUCTION

Karl Marx (1818–1883) fundamentally transformed political thought. He shifted focus from abstract justice to material conditions and class struggle.

Core Question: Who really controls the State?

2️⃣ HISTORICAL MATERIALISM

Marx argues that material (economic) conditions shape society.

  • Base → Mode of Production (economy)
  • Superstructure → State, law, religion, ideology

The economic base determines political institutions.

3️⃣ THEORY OF THE STATE

The State is NOT neutral. It is an instrument of class domination.

Famous line: "The executive of the modern state is but a committee for managing the common affairs of the bourgeoisie."

State under Capitalism:

  • Protects private property
  • Maintains capitalist interests
  • Suppresses working class resistance

4️⃣ CLASS STRUGGLE

History is the history of class struggle.

  • Bourgeoisie → Owners of capital
  • Proletariat → Workers

Conflict between these classes drives political change.

5️⃣ IDEOLOGY

Ideology is a tool of domination.

It creates "false consciousness" where workers accept exploitation.

Examples:
  • Religion
  • Nationalism
  • Media narratives

Ruling ideas are ideas of the ruling class.

6️⃣ ALIENATION

Workers are alienated from:

  • The product
  • The process
  • Their own humanity
  • Other workers

7️⃣ REVOLUTION & DICTATORSHIP OF PROLETARIAT

Capitalism will collapse due to internal contradictions.

Proletariat will overthrow bourgeois state.

Temporary stage: Dictatorship of the Proletariat.

Final stage: Classless, stateless communist society.

8️⃣ MARX vs LIBERALISM

  • Liberals → State is neutral
  • Marx → State is class-biased

9️⃣ MARX & GRAMSCI

Gramsci expands Marx: Not just coercion, but hegemony (cultural domination).

🔟 MARX & INDIA

Connections:
  • Class inequality
  • Corporate-state nexus
  • Labour exploitation
  • Land reforms

📝 MAINS QUESTIONS
