Michel Foucault – Power, Knowledge & Modern Discipline
Power is everywhere — not because it embraces everything, but because it comes from everywhere.
1️⃣ INTRODUCTION
Michel Foucault (1926–1984) was a French postmodern thinker. He transformed how we understand power.
Unlike Marx, Foucault did not see power only in the State or class. He believed power exists in everyday institutions.
2️⃣ POWER & KNOWLEDGE
Foucault argued:
- Knowledge produces power
- Power produces knowledge
- Truth is socially constructed
Example: Medical science defines "normal" and "abnormal" — this classification creates authority.
3️⃣ DISCIPLINARY POWER
Modern power works through discipline, not violence.
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Prisons
- Military
These institutions create obedient bodies.
4️⃣ PANOPTICON (Surveillance)
Inspired by Bentham’s prison design.
In Panopticon:
- People behave because they might be watched
- Surveillance becomes internalized
Modern example: CCTV, social media monitoring, digital data tracking.
5️⃣ BIOPOLITICS
Modern states control populations through:
- Census
- Public health
- Welfare schemes
- Statistics
The State manages life itself.
6️⃣ DIFFERENCE FROM MARX
- Marx → Economic domination
- Foucault → Discursive domination
- Marx → Centralized power
- Foucault → Diffused power
7️⃣ RELEVANCE FOR UPSC
Use Foucault in:
- Digital governance
- Aadhaar & surveillance
- Algorithmic state
- Media regulation
- Prison reforms
- Gender politics
