Power refers to the ability to influence or control the behavior of others.

It determines who gets what, when, and how in politics.

Power is not possessed; it circulates.

  • Embedded in institutions
  • Operates through knowledge
  • Disciplinary mechanisms

Power is productive, not merely repressive.


7️⃣ WHAT IS AUTHORITY?

Authority is legitimate power.

When power is accepted as rightful, it becomes authority.


8️⃣ MAX WEBER – TYPES OF AUTHORITY

  • Traditional Authority
  • Charismatic Authority
  • Legal-Rational Authority

Modern states primarily operate on legal-rational authority.


9️⃣ POWER vs AUTHORITY

  • Power may use force
  • Authority relies on legitimacy
  • Power can exist without consent
  • Authority requires acceptance

  • Decline of institutional authority
