Power is the ability of an individual or group to influence the behavior of others, even against their will.

Politics is fundamentally about power.

Harold Lasswell: “Politics is who gets what, when, how.”


2️⃣ ROBERT DAHL – ONE DIMENSIONAL VIEW

“A has power over B to the extent that A can get B to do something B would not otherwise do.”

Focus: Observable decision-making.

Power is visible in conflicts.

Power is rooted in economic structure.

Ruling class controls means of production and the state.

State = Instrument of class domination.


6️⃣ WEBER – POWER vs AUTHORITY

Power: Ability to impose will.

Authority: Legitimate power.

7️⃣ MICHEL FOUCAULT – POWER AS DISCIPLINE

Power is everywhere.

It operates through institutions, knowledge, discourse.

Power and knowledge are interconnected.

Modern power works through surveillance.


8️⃣ FEMINIST VIEW

Power exists in private sphere.

Patriarchy = Structural power system.

“Personal is political.”


9️⃣ SOFT POWER

Joseph Nye introduced concept of Soft Power.
