📘 POLITICAL THEORY – THE STATE

1️⃣ WHAT IS A STATE?

A State is a politically organized community living under a definite territory with a government and sovereignty.

It is the highest political organization in society.


2️⃣ FOUR ESSENTIAL ELEMENTS OF THE STATE

  • Population – People living within the territory
  • Territory – Definite geographical area
  • Government – Political authority
  • Sovereignty – Supreme power

Without sovereignty, the State becomes dependent.


3️⃣ DIFFERENCE: STATE vs GOVERNMENT vs NATION

  • State → Political organization
  • Government → Temporary ruling body
  • Nation → Emotional-cultural unity

A nation may exist without a state (e.g., Kurds). A state may contain many nations (e.g., India).


4️⃣ ORIGIN OF THE STATE – THEORIES

🔹 (A) Divine Theory

State created by God. Used to justify monarchy.

🔹 (B) Force Theory

State emerged through conquest.

🔹 (C) Social Contract Theory

  • Hobbes → Absolute State
  • Locke → Limited State
  • Rousseau → Popular Sovereign State

🔹 (D) Evolutionary Theory

State developed gradually from family → tribe → community → state.


5️⃣ LIBERAL VIEW OF THE STATE

  • State exists to protect rights
  • Limited government
  • Rule of law
  • Individual liberty is central

6️⃣ MARXIST VIEW OF THE STATE

State is an instrument of class domination.

  • Protects bourgeois interests
  • Will “wither away” in communism

7️⃣ PLURALIST VIEW

State is neutral arbiter among interest groups.

Power is distributed, not centralized.


8️⃣ FEMINIST CRITIQUE

State reinforces patriarchy.

  • Laws historically male-centric
  • Public-private divide

9️⃣ POST-MODERN VIEW

State authority is fragmented.

  • Global institutions challenge state power
  • Rise of identity politics

  • Sovereign, Socialist, Secular, Democratic Republic
  • Federal with strong center
  • Constitution is supreme
