1️⃣ INTRODUCTION
Jรผrgen Habermas (1929– ) is a German philosopher of the Frankfurt School. He responds to Marx, Weber, and Foucault.
If Foucault shows how power disciplines society, Habermas asks: Can communication create genuine democracy?
2️⃣ CRISIS OF MODERNITY
Habermas argues that modern society suffers from:
- Excessive bureaucratization
- Market domination
- Technocratic governance
He calls this the “colonization of the lifeworld”.
3️⃣ SYSTEM vs LIFEWORLD
๐น System
- State
- Market
- Bureaucracy
- Money & Power logic
๐น Lifeworld
- Family
- Culture
- Public debate
- Shared values
Problem: System invades lifeworld.
4️⃣ COMMUNICATIVE ACTION
Habermas says: True democracy requires rational communication.
Communication must satisfy:
- Truth
- Rightness
- Sincerity
- Clarity
Power should be replaced by reason.
5️⃣ PUBLIC SPHERE
Public Sphere = space where citizens debate freely.
Examples:- Media

In ideal public sphere: Better argument wins.
6️⃣ DELIBERATIVE DEMOCRACY
Democracy is not just voting. It is discussion-based legitimacy.
Law is legitimate only if citizens can rationally accept it.
7️⃣ HABERMAS vs FOUCAULT
- Foucault → Power everywhere.
- Habermas → Rational dialogue possible.
Foucault is skeptical. Habermas is hopeful.
8️⃣ INDIAN CONTEXT
