Michel Foucault – Power, Knowledge & Discipline
UPSC PSIR | Political Theory | Modern Power Analysis
1️⃣ INTRODUCTION
Michel Foucault (1926–1984) was a French postmodern thinker. He completely transformed how we understand power.
For Foucault, power is not something possessed. Power is everywhere. Power circulates.
2️⃣ CLASSICAL VIEW vs FOUCAULT
🔹 Classical View
- Power is held by state.
- Power is repressive.
- Power flows from top to bottom.
🔹 Foucault’s View
- Power is productive.
- Power is everywhere.
- Power flows through networks.
- Power shapes knowledge and identity.
Power is not just about law. It shapes who we are.
3️⃣ POWER & KNOWLEDGE
Foucault said: Power and knowledge are inseparable.
- Knowledge creates categories.
- Categories create normal/abnormal.
- Institutions enforce norms.
Example: Medical science defines “mental illness”. Society treats individuals accordingly.
Knowledge becomes a form of control.
4️⃣ DISCIPLINARY POWER
Modern power works through discipline.
- Schools
- Hospitals
- Prisons
- Military
These institutions train bodies and minds.
This creates “docile bodies”.
5️⃣ PANOPTICON
Inspired by Jeremy Bentham’s prison model.
In Panopticon: Prisoners never know when they are watched. So they behave as if always watched.
Modern society functions like a panopticon.
- CCTV
- Digital surveillance
- Social media monitoring
- Data tracking
We discipline ourselves.
6️⃣ BIOPOLITICS
Modern states regulate life itself.
- Population control
- Health policies
- Vaccination programs
- Census data
Power now manages life, not just territory.
7️⃣ FOUCAULT & DEMOCRACY
Even democratic states use subtle power.
Surveillance, exams, rankings, social categorization — all produce disciplined citizens.
Freedom exists within invisible structures.
8️⃣ INDIAN CONTEXT
- Aadhaar data governance
- Digital monitoring
- Educational ranking systems
- Media narratives
Modern governance uses knowledge to regulate behavior.
9️⃣ MAINS QUESTIONS

📌 QUICK REVISION MAP
