Model Answer 14
“Marx turned Hegel upside down.” Examine this statement with reference to their theories of state and history. (20 Marks)
🔹 Introduction
Karl Marx acknowledged his intellectual debt to Hegel but argued that Hegel’s philosophy stood on its head. While Hegel developed dialectical idealism, Marx transformed it into dialectical materialism, fundamentally altering the understanding of history and the state.
🔹 Hegel’s Idealism
- Reality is manifestation of the Absolute Spirit.
- History unfolds through dialectical progression of ideas.
- State represents ethical unity and highest moral authority.
For Hegel, the state is the embodiment of rational freedom.
🔹 Marx’s Materialism
- Material conditions determine consciousness.
- History driven by class struggle.
- State is instrument of class domination.
Marx replaces idea-driven dialectics with economic structures.
🔹 Theory of History
| Hegel | Marx |
|---|---|
| Dialectic of ideas | Dialectic of material forces |
| Spirit realizes freedom | Class struggle drives change |
| Teleological progression | Historical materialism |
🔹 Theory of the State
- Hegel: State as ethical whole above civil society.
- Marx: State reflects economic base and class interests.
🔹 Critical Evaluation
Marx radicalized Hegel’s dialectical method by grounding it in material reality. However, critics argue Marx reduced complex social relations to economic determinism, whereas Hegel’s ethical state risks authoritarian justification.
🔹 Conclusion
Marx indeed “turned Hegel upside down” by replacing idealism with materialism. Their contrasting theories offer competing visions of freedom, history and political authority.
