Liberalism prioritizes the autonomous individual and universal rights. Communitarian thinkers argue that individuals are socially embedded beings whose identities are shaped by community, culture and shared values. The debate highlights tensions between individual freedom and collective belonging.

🔹 Core Features of Liberal Individualism

  • Primacy of individual rights.
  • Neutral state regarding conceptions of good life.

Rawls’ theory of justice exemplifies this liberal framework.

  • Community values shape public life.

3️⃣ Moral Particularism

Communitarianism presents a strong and necessary critique of liberal individualism. The challenge lies in harmonizing autonomy with community in pluralist democracies.
