 NATION & NATIONALISM

1️⃣ WHAT IS A NATION?

A Nation is a group of people who share common identity based on history, culture, language, ethnicity, or political values.

It is not merely a geographical territory. It is a psychological and emotional bond.

Key Elements:

  • Shared History
  • Common Culture
  • Collective Memory
  • Sense of Belonging
  • Political Aspiration

2️⃣ WHAT IS NATIONALISM?

Nationalism is the ideology that believes the nation should have its own political sovereignty.

It argues that political boundaries should coincide with national identity.

In simple terms: Nation = Identity Nationalism = Political demand for self-rule.


3️⃣ TYPES OF NATIONALISM

🟢 (A) Civic Nationalism

Based on shared political values and constitution. Inclusive in nature. Example: USA, France.

🔴 (B) Ethnic Nationalism

Based on race, culture, language. Often exclusionary. Example: 19th century Germany.

🟡 (C) Cultural Nationalism

Focuses on preserving traditions and civilizational heritage.

🟣 (D) Anti-Colonial Nationalism

Nationalism that emerged against imperial rule. Example: Indian freedom movement.

Ernest Renan: Nation is a “daily plebiscite” (shared will).

Benedict Anderson: Nation is an “Imagined Community”.

Gellner: Nationalism is a product of modern industrial society.

Anthony Smith: Ethno-symbolism (historical roots matter).


5️⃣ NATIONALISM & MODERN STATE

Modern state legitimacy often depends on nationalism.

It creates unity but may also create exclusion.

Globalization challenges nationalism but it is resurging worldwide.


6️⃣ CRITICISM OF NATIONALISM

  • Can lead to xenophobia
  • Majoritarian politics

  • Suppression of minorities
