 HEGEMONY – Antonio Gramsci

Power Through Consent, Not Just Coercion

1️⃣ WHAT IS HEGEMONY?

Hegemony refers to the dominance of one class over others not merely through force, but through consent and cultural leadership.

Gramsci argued that ruling classes maintain power by shaping ideas, beliefs and values of society.

2️⃣ GRAMSCI’S BACKGROUND

Antonio Gramsci was an Italian Marxist thinker. He wrote his ideas in the famous "Prison Notebooks".

He modified classical Marxism by focusing on culture and ideology rather than only economic structure.

3️⃣ POLITICAL SOCIETY vs CIVIL SOCIETY

Political Society: State, police, army – uses coercion.

Civil Society: Media, schools, religion, family – shapes consent.

Ruling class dominates civil society to manufacture consent.

4️⃣ CONSENT vs COERCION

Marx focused on economic exploitation.

Gramsci argued: Modern capitalism survives because people accept the system as natural.

This acceptance is ideological hegemony.

5️⃣ ORGANIC INTELLECTUALS

Gramsci introduced the idea of Organic Intellectuals.

These are thinkers emerging from working class who challenge dominant ideology.

They help build counter-hegemony.

6️⃣ WAR OF POSITION vs WAR OF MANOEUVRE

  • War of Manoeuvre: Direct revolution (violent overthrow).
  • War of Position: Long-term ideological struggle within civil society.

Gramsci believed modern revolution requires war of position.
